AI Technology Use at UC Davis

Guidance, Tools & News About Generative AI

Tomorrow’s students will graduate in a world where artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled research, authoring, and decision-making will be key professional skills. The promise of AI is unprecedented, and universities must place AI technologies in the context of a new framework for student success, their larger institutional strategy, and technology roadmap. While artificial intelligence has been in use for many years, the emergence of generative AI (or GenAI) tools opens new horizons for more agile learning experiences, stronger digital equity and inclusion, and closer human relationships.

UC Davis is a dynamic incubator for GenAI innovation in teaching, learning, research, and productivity. Our web pages curate GenAI resources and provide guidance for security and privacy, compliance, copyright, academic integrity, accountability, accuracy, bias, and other related issues as they arise. Be sure to check with your school, college, or unit for specific guidelines on using GenAI tools at UC Davis.

UC Davis GenAI Guidance

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) refers to emerging technologies that use large language models (LLMs) and vast amounts of data from the internet to understand and create content—including text, images, and computer code. UC Davis supports responsible experimentation with GenAI. Before using GenAI tools, remember to:

  1. Review the university’s initial guidance for the use of generative AI tools, including guidelines around the use of sensitive university data with publicly available tools. Click here for the guidelines on the use of AI for UC Davis communications.

  2. Check and follow specific guidelines from your school or college related to the use of generative AI.

  3. Review and verify any AI-generated content that you publish or share with others. Some GenAI output can be inaccurate or misleading. Always verify the accuracy of AI-generated output.

  4. Consider copyright issues: AI-generated content can contain copyrighted material. You are responsible for any AI-generated content that you publish or make available to others.

Introducing Rocky

Rocky is the first GenAI chat tool from Aggie AI and was developed as a collaboration between the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and IET. Rocky is an interactive campus guide that members of the university community can use to ask questions and navigate their life at UC Davis.

In fall 2024, Rocky is in closed beta, meaning that we are still testing and optimizing its features for a wider campus release.
