Federal Laws
- Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
- USA Patriot Act of 2002 (PDF)
Broadens governmental access to electronic communication, particularly if there exists a reasonable belief of immediate danger of death or serious physical injury. - Family Education Rights and Privacy Act Regulations
Sets out requirements for the protection of privacy of parents and students under section 444 of the General Education Provisions Act, as amended. - CAN-SPAM Act
Defines and sets forth guidelines for the use of commercial electronic mail messages. - Gramm-Leach-Bliley (GLB) Act
Requires financial institutions to protect the privacy of consumer financial information. Universities are subject to the GLB Act Safeguards Rule, which requires institutions to design and implement security measures to protect the confidentiality and integrity of non-public personal information.

Describes policies regarding campus telecommunications networks and services. The policy expands upon Section 310-16 to provide specific guidance associated with use of the telecommunications resources provided by UC Davis.
- Campus Computer Vulnerability Scanning Policy
Establishes that computers, servers, and other devices connected to the campus network will be free of critical security vulnerabilities.
Administrative Policies

Establishes that devices connected to the UC Davis electronic communications network must meet UC Davis security standards or seek exception authorization. These standards are explicit in the policy. - Administrative Computing Systems Policy (P&P 200-45) (7/1/99)
Sets forth policy and assigns general responsibility for setting and achieving the administrative computing goals outlined in the Campus Administrative Computing Plan. The plan is intended to promote alignment of administrative computing systems and guide development of specific solutions to administrative computing requirements.

This section implements the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which governs the disclosure of information from student records, as well as the UC Policies Applying to the Disclosure of Information from Student Records.

This Policy addresses ownership of copyright; it does not address ownership or access to the underlying research results or data.
