Firewall Basics

Firewall Subsidization

Information and Educational Technology is taking applications for the Firewall Subsidy program.  This program reimburses campus units for acquisition and first-year support costs of new VLAN firewalls.  To apply, submit an application to the campus IT Security Coordinator. Applications for firewall subsidies will no longer be accepted after July 1, 2008. 

Subsidy applications must reflect a cost-effective VLAN firewall deployment strategy and include:

  • The specific campus unit name and the respective VLANs for which network firewalls will be acquired and deployed
  • The projected deployment date of the firewall(s) – if multiple firewalls, specify projected individual firewall deployment dates
  • The acquisition, deployment and first-year administrative costs subject to reimbursement for the VLAN firewall(s)
  • If more than 30 percent of an organization's maximum subsidy amount is requested, written justification for the elevated reimbursement for past expenditures must be provided in the request. This justification must indicate the extent to which the request for additional dollars for previous firewall expenses supports the program's objective of expanding campus unit deployment of VLAN firewalls.

Further, each application must indicate that the senior technical director and senior administrator from each college, school or administrative unit acknowledges that 1) the VLAN firewalls to be deployed under this subsidization program will use a configuration that complies with the UC Davis Cyber-safety security standards and 2) the subsidy recipient will assume the ongoing financial obligation of the VLAN firewall(s).
