Encryption
If you know or suspect that you have restricted data on your computer, you must take action to protect it. To help you protect restricted data, Pointsec for PC whole disk encryption software is now available. Information and Educational Technology (IET) will cover 100% of the cost of Pointsec for PC licenses for individuals and departments demonstrating the need for encryption.
About Pointsec for PCPointsec for PC is a Microsoft Windows compatible whole disk encryption software package currently available for Windows XP and Windows 2000.
Two other Pointsec products—Pointsec Media Encryption (ME) and Pointsec for Linux—are also available, but are not subsidized or supported by IET. See https://my.ucdavis.edu/software for more information about each of these products.
Qualifying for Free Pointsec for PC
If you can answer yes to the questions below, you likely qualify for subsidized (free) Pointsec for PC encryption software.
- Has the system been scanned for sensitive data?
- Does the system contain sensitive data?
- Is it absolutely necessary for sensitive data to reside on that system?
- Is the system at risk for loss or theft?
- Does the system meet the minimum system requirements for Pointsec for PC? (see Pre-installation Checklist)
Requesting Pointsec for PC
Whether you qualify for IET to cover the cost or not, the process for requesting Pointsec for PC is the same:
- REVIEW Information for System Administrators and/or Frequently Asked Questions for more information about encryption and Pointsec.
- COMPLETE the Pre-install Checklist to ensure your system(s) meet the minimum Pointsec installation requirements.
- SUBMIT your Consultation Request to software@ucdavis.edu. A member of the security group will contact you to discuss your encryption needs and to ensure that encryption is right for you.
- FAX your Billing/Consent form to Software Licensing at (530) 754-5205.
- SEND restoration and installation confirmation files to cybersecurity@ucdavis.edu after Pointsec has been installed.
