UC Davis Cyber-Safety Program: Anti-Virus Software
If you are a computer user within an academic or administrative department on campus, you may have a Technology Support Coordinator (TSC) who is working to secure your system. Before taking any of the security steps listed below, please check with your TSC.
From the UC Davis Cyber-Safety Program Policy:
"Anti-virus software must be running and updates must be applied within no more than 24 hours of update release for computing hosts connected to the campus network.
This standard applies to computers and PDAs connected to the campus network using Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, Palm or Windows Mobile PC operating systems."
To meet this standard...
Ensure you have anti-virus software installed and keep it up-to-date. If you do not have anti-virus software installed:
- Download Sophos anti-virus from the software link at MyUCDavis.
Campus sysadmins recommend...
- Campus virus filtering for departmental email servers
- Trend Micro: campus virus filtering solution
- ClamAV: an open-source virus scanner for Windows, Linux, Unix, OpenBSD, and Mac OS X.
- McAfee's free Stinger application: destroys a particular subset of viruses and worms that are difficult to remove with conventional anti-virus software.
Special Considerations...
Some network devices, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) and smartphones may be subject to emerging threats. Anti-virus programs for these devices may be unavailable or immature. Campus units may determine that the virus threats to PDAs and smartphones need to be monitored and implemented as the threat increases.
